FOCUS – Project week January 29 – February 5, 2018

  • Education – Teach workshops for youth, adults and families
  • Youth with special needs/disabilities – build therapy equipment
  • Families in need – Provide basic needs (food, safe drinking water, etc)

VOLUNTEERS – Join us for just one activity, a couple or more. You select how much (or little) you want to participate based on your interests and time available. See schedule, how to sign up and project list below.

Volunteers who commit to participate in several or more activities are requested to attend the Welcome Happy Hour Orientation on Monday, January 29 4-6pm at Karen & Larry Pedersen’s. Volunteers planning to participate in one or two activities need not attend the orientation but please confirm with us electronically by 1/29 which specific activity you plan to participate in so we can send you the details and notify you of schedule changes

HOW/WHEN TO SIGN UP – Early electronic signup before 1/29 is encouraged if you know what activities you would like to do. Each project has a defined number of volunteers needed. If you are unsure or want to receive more information about projects at the 1/29 orientation, you can sign up then. Sign up by sending a list of specific activity(ies) you are volunteering for to Karen Pedersen via FB message or email: pedersenkj@hotmail.com.

MISSION PROJECTS LISTED BY TYPES OF VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE/INTEREST

Teaching/facilitating learning workshops @ various organizations/schools Demos/helping youth, adults and families learn; Spanish not required – we will ensure a minimum of 2 Spanish speakers per workshop. Note: Repurposing and Carpentry have planning session + workshop. There are multiple repurposing and sewing workshops. Workshop leader(s) will be consistent for each topic, but other volunteers do not need to commit all sessions of the same topic.

  1. 3 Sewing Workshops: Bags 1/31 9am; Boxers 2/2 6pm; Home Decor 2/3 5pm – Volunteers have already been identified for most of these workshops
  2. 3 Repurposing Workshops—reusing materials (pallet wood, plastics, fabrics) to create useful household items: 1/31 9am and 7pm; 2/2 6pm
  3. Cooking Workshop for young adults with disabilities 2/1 8am
  4. Craft Workshop (decorate bags) for young adults with disabilities 2/1 8am
  5. Carpentry Workshop (teach use of tools) for teachers and young adults with disabilities 2/2 8am
  6. Wood Craft Workshop for church youth 2/3 5pm
  7. Music Workshop (singing & using hand percussion instruments) for church youth 2/3 6pm

Translation Translators are needed for almost all workshops to help English speaking volunteers communicate with Spanish speaking participants. Tell us what workshop/s (dates and hours above) you are available.

Construction (Wood) @ Pedersen’s carpentry shop

  • Remove paint & sand to refinish premade children’s wood tables/chairs 1/30 9am (Centro Autismo)
  • 2 Picnic tables 1/30 2pm and 1/31 9am (CAM Laboral)
  • 3 Therapy swings 1/31 2pm (CRIM, CAM Primaria)
  • 2 Wood doorway gates; 2 shelves; 1 backpack rack 2/2 2pm (Centro de Autismo)

Painting & Varnishing

  • Paint children’s tables & chairs 1/30 2pm 1st coat and/or 2/1 2pm 2nd coat
  • Varnish picnic tables 1/31 3pm 1st coat and/or 2/1 10am 2nd coat + therapy swings
  • Varnish gates, shelves, backpack rack 2/3 1pm and/or 2nd coat 2/4 9am

Assembling items made from PVC

  • Construct PVC shower chair for disabled child 2/1 2pm (Corazones Unidos)
  • Assemble PVC music shakers for youth to use as hand percussion instruments 2/1 4pm

Inventory/store school supplies & other donations—Detail oriented volunteers & someone to lift crates

  • Sort/count inventory of backpacks & donations brought by volunteers 1/29 9am
  • Reorganize crates of bazar donations 2/4 9am and/or 2/5 9am

Shop for food & supplies—Deliver to families and organizations; we’ll help arrange transport

  • Good project for individual or small team of volunteers. List provided. Volunteers to determine their schedule

Transportation—Volunteers available to deliver supplies/volunteers to various locations. See workshop dates above; also need “on call” drivers to help transport volunteers to shop for supplies to homes/organizations. Tell us which dates you are available to transport. You don’t have to stay for activity.

Photographers—Briefly attend events & work sessions to take photos & download to shared photo library. Tell us days/times you are available and we’ll coordinate/confirm photographer for each event.

Blog writers—Write a brief description of one or more activities sharing participant reactions and/or your personal experience. Write at your convenience and send to blog coordinator for editing/posting by agreed on time.
