Friends of Cozumel supports youth ministries that focus on teaching basic values, respect and self-responsibility for a better future. Local pastors and lay leaders welcome children from diverse religious affiliations and invite youth to participate who have no church “home”. Pastors consider youth participation to be one of the most effective forms of evangelism, reaching out to families in need.
Ongoing weekly youth ministries are sponsored by many local churches and missions. For example, Vida Abundante (Abundant Life) sponsors a youth group for 35 children ages 3 – 12. Volunteer leaders actively involve the children in learning through singing, dancing, games and from puppets donated by SAIL. The Bible Blessings ministry provided illustrated children’s stories of the Bible to use for their weekly lessons but other basic resources are scarce. There is no church budget to provide pencils, crayons, paper, scissors or copies of worksheets. Other church and mission groups need children’s bibles, educational materials and supplies.
Vida Abundante also sponsors a teen/young adult ministry for older youth to involve them in productive activities as an alternative to gangs or addictions. Many are recovering from various addictions and they have formed a Christian rap music/dance group that performs in neighborhood parks for evangelism outreach activities.
Bible School is the only learning activity available to youth during their summer break from school mid-July to mid-August. One or more donors are needed annually to sponsor purchase of the teaching/learning packet of materials for volunteer Bible School teachers, making copies of the children’s booklets, and other supplies.
Vida Abundante also sponsors a week-long Bible School for 100+ children.
